Join us on Saturday, July 13 for Sailing + Science: A Day on the Charles River for Roxbury and Dorchester.
What is Sailing + Science? The program is a fun, free day of on-the-water and on-land activities on the Charles River for residents of Roxbury and Dorchester! Sail with an instructor (no experience necessary), visit the Museum of Science, picnic (lunch provided), explore, bird watch, kayak, and learn more about what the Charles River has to offer you.
Location: Community Boating, 21 David G. Mugar Way, Boston, MA 02114 in The Charles River Esplanade.
Time: 10 AM – 2 PM
Who: Roxbury and Dorchester residents; free advanced tickets required.
Activities at Sailing + Science:
A) SAIL on the Charles River at Community Boating (Sail with staff, lifejackets provided, all ages, no experience necessary, do not need to know how to swim–plus, Rox/Dot attendees will get a free 30 day pass to return and sail!)
B) Go on a BIRD WALKING TOUR in the relaxing green spaces on The Esplanade
C) Learn about the world around you using microscopes with BioBus
D) VISIT THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE on July 13 or use the ticket later this year. (Museum passes will be available for registered participants upon check-in; they can be used on 7/13 or for a later date; 15 minute walk between Community Boating and the Museum of Science)
E) PICNIC (lunch provided by Jamaica Mi Hungry) and relax in public spaces along the Charles River
F) EAT ICE CREAM from Tipping Cow
G) EXPLORE the Charles River Esplanade and learn about the health benefits of the waterfront
H) Learn more about COOL PUBLIC SPACES, climate change, and what the Charles River waterfront has to offer you
I) KAYAK ( for ages 9+ and 40+ inches tall)
GETTING THERE
Highly recommend using public transportation. The location is not accessible by car, as it is located in a pedestrian park.
At the program, there will be free two-trip MBTA passes available. You can also stop by TACC’s office at 2136 Washington Street, Floor 2 in Nubian Square (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm), if you want to pick one up in advance.
Transportation/Directions:
MBTA: It is easily accessible using the Red Line.
From Roxbury, take the 47 bus inbound to Broadway and then the Red Line to Charles/MGH.
From Dorchester, take the Red Line to Charles/MGH. It is a 6 minute walk from the station.

DROP-OFF POINT: If you are being dropped off or taking a rideshare, the best drop-off point is 155 Charles Street near CVS. See walking directions/map below.
PARKING: There is no public parking available and street in the area is limited. The closest parking is at the LAZ parking lot located next to the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary and adjacent to the Red Line Charles/MGH traffic circle at a flat fee of $14. 1) Enter the Charles Street rotary following signs for Storrow Drive West. You will see the on-ramp for Storrow Drive West. 2) Do not go up the ramp, but instead look to the left for a large blue sign that says LAZ PARKING. See walking directions/map below.
ARRIVAL
Arrive to the Welcome Tent located at Community Boating, 21 David G. Mugar Way, Boston, MA 02114 in The Charles River Esplanade.
When you arrive, first stop at the Welcome Tent (orange/pink) to:
1. Let us know you are here;
2. Sign a waiver and get a wristbands;
3. Go over the available activities with staff;
4. Pick up a map that shows you where to go to access activities throughout the day; and
5. Pick up your lunch, ice cream, and Museum of Science tickets.
